Industry operators have encountered challenging conditions during the past five years. Revenue grew in 2015-16, as improving economic conditions enticed businesses to increase spending on furniture. However, revenue fell from 2016-17 as the uncertainties caused by the EU referendum encouraged businesses to cautiously manage spending budgets. Meanwhile, the strong growth in online sales caused severe challenges to bricks-and-mortar retailers and forced thousands of high-street stores to close.
