Back on the charge: Industry revenue has recovered following a sharp earlier decline

The Petrol Stations industry has undergone a turbulent period. Over the five years through 2018-19, revenue is forecast to fall at a compound annual rate of 2% to reach £16.1 billion. At the beginning of the period, price competition was fierce as global crude oil prices plummeted, dragging down fuel prices and leading to a particularly significant decline in revenue in 2015-16. A low-price environment had been exacerbated by the dominance of supermarkets. This, combined with growing environmental concerns, led to lower volumes being sold at the retail level. Furthermore, although motor vehicle registrations have risen steadily over the past decade, people are driving their cars less, exchanging car journeys for public transport and more.
