Motoring on: Industry revenue continues to grow despite subdued economic conditions

The industry has performed strongly over the past five years, although growth has slowed more recently. Industry revenue benefited from rising demand from key markets as car production and demand from retailers increased. Improving disposable income and rising business expenditure at the start of the period supported demand for parts as the number of new car sales increased strongly through 2016. However, subdued economic conditions in the latter half of the period have weighed on revenue growth as car production and new car sales continue to slow. Revenue is forecast to increase by 1.8% in 2018-19. Overall, industry revenue is expected to rise at a compound annual rate of 3.4% over the five years through 2018-19 to reach £14.7 more.
